Card Security
Your card is protected by multiple layers of security, from PIN authorisation to real-time fraud monitoring. Learn how we keep your money safe.
How Your Card Is Protected
Every Whitestone Trust Credit Union card is built with security at its core. Whether you are shopping in-store, paying online, or using your virtual card for digital subscriptions, multiple safeguards work together to protect every transaction.
PIN Protection
Every card transaction at a point-of-sale terminal or ATM requires your personal 4-digit PIN. Without it, the card cannot be used for in-person purchases or cash withdrawals. Your PIN is encrypted and never stored in plain text anywhere in our systems.
Real-Time Alerts
Receive instant notifications for every card transaction via SMS, email, or push notification. Alerts include the merchant name, transaction amount, and time stamp, allowing you to spot and report anything unusual within seconds.
24/7 Fraud Monitoring
Our automated systems continuously analyse transaction patterns. If a transaction appears out of character -- such as a purchase in an unusual location or an abnormally large amount -- it is flagged for review and may be blocked until you confirm it.
EMV Chip Technology
All physical debit cards include an encrypted EMV chip that generates a unique transaction code for each purchase. This prevents card counterfeiting and makes it virtually impossible for criminals to create a usable copy of your card.
Card Controls
From your online banking dashboard, you can instantly freeze or unfreeze your card, set spending limits, restrict transactions to certain countries or merchant categories, and enable or disable online payments -- all in real time.
Two-Factor Authentication
Online and high-value card transactions require additional verification through a one-time code sent to your registered phone or email. This ensures that even if your card details are compromised, a second factor is needed to complete a purchase.
Safe Card Usage Tips
While we provide robust security, there are simple steps you can take to further safeguard your card and personal information.
Do
- Memorise your PIN and never write it on the card or keep it in your wallet
- Shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN at a terminal or ATM
- Review your transaction history weekly through your online banking dashboard
- Enable transaction alerts so you are notified of every card payment
- Keep your card in a secure place when not in use
Don't
- Share your card number, PIN, CVV, or expiry date with anyone
- Let the card out of your sight during a transaction
- Use your card on websites that do not display a padlock icon in the address bar
- Respond to unsolicited calls or messages asking for card details
- Store your card details in unsecured apps or note-taking software
Online Shopping Safety
Online payments are convenient, but they also introduce unique risks. Follow these guidelines to shop safely with your Whitestone Trust Credit Union card.
- Verify the merchant: Only make purchases from reputable websites. Check the URL begins with
https://and that the padlock icon is present in your browser's address bar before entering any payment details. - Use your virtual card: For online shopping, consider using a Whitestone Trust Credit Union Virtual Card. Virtual cards generate unique card numbers linked to your account, adding an extra layer of separation between the merchant and your primary account.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi: Never enter card details when connected to unsecured public Wi-Fi networks. Use a trusted VPN if you must make a payment while away from home.
- Watch for phishing: Be cautious of emails or text messages that appear to be from retailers asking you to confirm payment details. Always navigate to a website directly rather than clicking a link in an unsolicited message.
- Keep records: Save order confirmations and payment receipts until you have received your purchase and verified the charge on your account statement.
Protecting Your PIN
Your Personal Identification Number is the primary gatekeeper for in-person transactions. Protecting it is one of the most effective ways to prevent card fraud.
- Choose a strong PIN: Avoid obvious numbers such as your birth date, anniversary, phone number, or repeated digits (e.g., 1111 or 1234). Select a number that cannot be easily guessed.
- Change it regularly: Update your PIN every few months through any Whitestone Trust Credit Union ATM or from your online banking dashboard.
- Use unique PINs: Do not use the same PIN for your bank card that you use for your phone, alarm system, or other services.
- Cover the keypad: At ATMs and payment terminals, use your free hand to shield the keypad from view. Shoulder-surfing and hidden cameras are common methods criminals use to capture PINs.
- Never disclose it: No legitimate bank employee, police officer, or merchant will ever ask for your PIN. If someone does, refuse and report the incident.
What to Do If You Notice Unusual Activity
If you spot a transaction you do not recognise, or if your card is used in a way that seems suspicious, take the following steps without delay:
Freeze Your Card
Log in to your dashboard and use the card freeze function to immediately block further transactions on the affected card.
Review Your Transactions
Check your recent transaction history carefully. Note any transactions you do not recognise and compile the dates, amounts, and merchant names.
Contact Us
Report the suspicious activity to our fraud team through your dashboard, by calling our 24/7 hotline, or by visiting a branch. Provide all details you have gathered.
Request a Replacement
If fraud is confirmed, we will cancel the compromised card and issue a replacement with a new number. Your funds remain protected under our zero-liability policy for unauthorised transactions.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can reset your PIN through your online banking dashboard under Card Settings, or by visiting any Whitestone Trust Credit Union ATM. For security reasons, we cannot tell you your existing PIN, as it is encrypted and not accessible to our staff. You will need to set a new PIN using the reset process, which requires identity verification via a one-time code sent to your registered phone or email.
A safe website will display a padlock icon in your browser's address bar and its URL will begin with https:// (the 's' stands for secure). You can also look for trust seals from organisations such as Norton, McAfee, or the payment processor's own security badge. If in doubt, visit the merchant through a known link rather than following one from an email or advertisement.
Yes. Virtual cards from Whitestone Trust Credit Union carry the same security protections as physical cards, including transaction alerts, spending controls, and real-time fraud monitoring. Additionally, virtual cards offer an extra layer of protection because the card number is unique to the virtual card -- if it is compromised, your primary account and physical card remain unaffected. You can generate a new virtual card number instantly from your dashboard. Learn more about virtual cards.
Whitestone Trust Credit Union maintains a zero-liability policy for unauthorised transactions, provided you have taken reasonable care to protect your card and PIN and you report the unauthorised activity promptly. As soon as you notify us of suspicious transactions, we will investigate and, where fraud is confirmed, refund the disputed amounts. This protection is subject to our Terms of Use, so please review them for full details.
